Ottawa, CA: Kongsberg Gallium, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kongsberg Defense Systems, today announced it had joined the Alliance for System Safety of UAS through Research Excellence (ASSURE) partnership.
A leading research organization, the ASSURE alliance comprises of 18 universities and over 100 industry and government partners. Kongsberg Gallium joins the alliance to provide support in the integration of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System (NAS) through the provision of unique products and expertise.
The group envisions that Kongsberg Gallium’s I-SIM® high fidelity air traffic simulator will be used in ASSURE’s research, including control and communication, detect and avoid, air traffic control interoperability, and airport ground operations.
I-SIM is currently in use within the FAA for air space design and analysis, human factors experimentation, facilities research and training. The powerful I-SIM simulation engine imports recorded data from the National Air Space to enable rapid, real life scenario creation. Combining recorded real life data with UAS specific data enables unprecedented realism into UAS integration issues.
“This is a great fit for Kongsberg Gallium and ASSURE” said Bob Deroode, Vice President, ATC Systems. “We’re excited to join their research efforts and look forward to a long partnership”
Kongsberg Gallium’s many years of air traffic expertise, including Human Machine Interface experimentation, supporting the FAA in its airspace design initiatives, and in working with various human factors organizations, will provide the ASSURE team with an enhanced research capability.
Currently ASSURE is competing to be the first Centre of Excellence for Unmanned Aircraft Systems, which the FAA intends to establish later this year.
