The USS Hopper (DDG 70) launches a missile

Ottawa, CA: Kongsberg Geospatial, an Ottawa-based developer of real-time, mission critical, geospatial and Command and Control software recently marked its 15th year contributing to the U.S. Navy Aegis Combat System program.

Aegis, developed and produced by Lockheed Martin, is the world’s preeminent combat management system. It uses powerful radar and advanced software to simultaneously track, identify, and target hostile contacts, including air, surface and subsurface threats. Aegis also provides a Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) which allows multiple ships to interoperate to protect entire battlegroup and theatre assets.

Aegis is deployed aboard U.S. Navy cruisers and destroyers, and in the surface fleets of Australia, Norway, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Spain. A shore-based version of Aegis is also used for missile defense in Europe. Aegis is named for the mythological shield of Poseidon, and is known as the “shield of the fleet”.

In 2001, Kongsberg Geospatial was selected to provide high performance mapping and user interface software technology for the Aegis Display System, and the company continues to develop and provide enhanced software products to meet continually evolving mission requirements.

“This is a very important program for us”, explained company president Ranald McGillis. “Naval and military platforms are planned and developed with lifecycles that extend over decades, while software products tend to have shorter life spans. The software products we provide for Aegis have met 15 years of requirements growth and continually evolving missions. This demonstrates the reliability of our products, our commitment to R&D and introduction of new capabilities, as well as our ability to provide complete lifecycle support to critical defense and security programs.”

Initially used by the United States Navy, Aegis is now used also by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, Spanish Navy, Royal Norwegian Navy, and Republic of Korea Navy. The Royal Australian Navy selected the Aegis system for its new Air Warfare Destroyers. A new land-based variant called Aegis Ashore is part of NATO's European missile defense system.

Kongsberg Geospatial’s flagship product, InterMAPhics, was initially selected for the program based on ability to deliver extremely high performance, support for open standards, and ease of integration. Today, Kongsberg Geospatial remains one of the predominant suppliers of high performance geospatial visualization software and services to defense and security agencies worldwide.
